Burn Accidents

Do you need a burn injury attorney in Albuquerque? It is estimated that over one million burn injuries occur each year in the United States.

According to the Center for Disease Control, fire and burns are the fifth leading cause of accidental or preventable death. Approximately fifty per cent of all burns are suffered by children under the age of four years old according to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.

Burns are often caused by an explosion, fire, hot liquids, chemicals, electricity or sunlight. Burns may result from an accident caused by another person's negligence. This may include premises liability, defective equipment, defective or dangerous products, negligent security or common law negligence.

Most common burns are caused by:

  • Automobile Accidents
  • Gas and Fuel Explosions
  • Scalding or Hot Water
  • Electrical Accidents
  • Chemical Burns and Industrial Accidents

Injuries suffered from burns are classified in three ways:

1st Degree Burns: Affect only the outer layer of the epidermis, the skin. They are the most common type of burn injury. Symptoms are pain, swelling and there are no blisters. A sunburn is usually classified as a first-degree burn.

2nd Degree Burns: Affect the superficial (papillary) skin. With a second-degree burn, the skin will be red, there will be a lot of pain and blisters that contain clear fluid.

3rd or 4th Degree Burns: Affect the skin and underlying tissues and sometimes the fascia, bone and muscle. These are the most severe burns and often cause extensive scarring. They can require lengthy hospitalizations and long recovery times with multiple surgeries.

Burns may result in serious personal injury, pain, suffering and disfigurement. Injuries from burns may result in extensive medical bills, wage losses and economic losses. Damages may include future losses and compensation for permanent injuries.
